10 JoJo's Bizarre Characters That Fans Dislike

Charles Ono
Hello! My name is Charlles, and I'm passionate about Japanese culture, especially the world of anime. Here, I share curiosities, news, and everything related to this world...

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure  has been around for almost 40 years . That's a long time, especially for a manga that effectively redefines its cast from scratch with each iteration. Over the decades, JoJo has amassed a massive roster of friendly (and not-so-friendly) faces in a narrative led by nine distinct Joestars. These characters stolen the spotlight from the titular JoJo , but for one reason or another, they're often forgotten by fans. So, check out some of the characters most fans reject!

JoJo's Bizarre Characters That Fans Reject – Top 10

10. Narancia

Anime - Jojo Golden Wind
Anime – Jojo Golden Wind

Narancia is one of the most brilliant members of Golden Wind across the board—unfortunately, in a darkly charged role, his brilliance often becomes mere comedy. In everyday life, he's portrayed as naive, simple-minded, and immature compared to the rest of Team Bucciarati. Combat-wise, he's already at a disadvantage: Aerosmith is one of JoJo , and in a team with flashy and mind-blowing Stands like Gold Experience, Sticky Fingers, and Sex Pistols, he's bound to fall a bit flat.

In some ways, Narancia resembles Hol Horse, both in being relegated to mere comic relief and in having a vastly underrated Stand. Narancia's presence in a group full of strong personalities is crucial to the balance, and his backstory is both moving and strangely inspiring. Narancia is a shining example of an incredible character, for all the wrong reasons.

09. Muhammed Avdol

Anime – Jojo Stardust Crusaders
Anime – Jojo Stardust Crusaders

Many would say Jotaro carries Stardust Crusaders , and yes, he's very important. But we think Avdol deserves the same recognition. From his first appearance—as an Egyptian fortune teller alongside British-American Joseph Joestar in Japan—Avdol serves as a representative of the truly global implications of Dio's revival. His Stand, Magician's Red, is often overlooked because, despite being a short-range powerhouse, it's quite ordinary compared to the eccentric Stands Araki would conjure even in Stardust Crusaders .

Even so, Avdol is a powerhouse and, in many ways, embodies the spirit of the third installment of JoJo . From possessing one of the first Stands JoJo have ever seen, to the lightheartedness he brings in moments like being captured by Moriah's magnetic Stand alongside Joseph, to the melodrama he manages to evoke in moments like his dramatic "resurrection," Avdol embodies everything there is to love about Stardust Crusaders . He serves as both a literal and spiritual guide throughout their journeys, and his wisdom, strength, and charm make him unforgettable.

08. Trish

Anime - Jojo Golden Wind

Trish embodies wasted potential, yet she still manages to be an intriguing highlight of Golden Wind . Fans will remember her as Diavolo's daughter, who plays a substantial role in Golden Wind , to say the least. Despite becoming the center of the story and eventually joining Giorno's crew, Trish gets very little time in the spotlight for her own personal exploration.

It's a shame for two main reasons. First, because her Stand, Spice Girl, is unique in its consciousness and lethal with its unique skill set; not to mention that her humanoid design makes her feel like the Stand of a fully-fledged protagonist (and in terms of design, Stone Free is one step away from being Spice Girl). Second, because she's in a position in the story to tell a story that no one else can. Instead, she had to fight once before being relegated to a supporting role.

07. Jonathon Joestar (Phantom Blood)

Anime - Jojo Phantom Blood
Anime – Jojo Phantom Blood

JoJo 's most underrated protagonist on this list. Ever since JoJo began gaining traction with Western audiences a few years ago, online forum users have been asking whether the first installment of JoJo, Phantom Blood , can be ignored. It's true that Phantom Blood doesn't consider the series fully adapted to the themes and characteristics it would later adopt. But from the beginning, JoJo found the perfect embodiment of its ideals in Jonathan, and it retains much of his goofy charm to this day.

Ambitious, noble, and approaching the (then) absolute limit of human potential while defending himself from paranormal threats, Jonathon exemplified and solidified the qualities that would come to represent the franchise as a whole: he fights for humanity purely out of love for humanity and its ideals. He may not be as mischievous as Joseph or as serene as Jotaro, but his construction as a classic shonen hero makes him feel like a bridge between "ordinary" shonen and the very special and bizarre manga he himself establishes.

06. Hol Horse

Anime – Jojo Stardust Crusaders
Anime – Jojo Stardust Crusaders

Hol Horse is one of the highlights of Stardust Crusaders , and it's true that fans love him—but, as the title suggests, they often don't appreciate him enough. It's true that Hol Horse is one of Stardust Crusaders Stardust Crusaders villains are portrayed as, and is right on the brink of redemption.

Not to mention, he's hilarious. Hol Horse is genuinely a lot of fun to watch, and his Stand is refreshingly simple. But the problem lies in limiting him to his comedic role and seeing him only within the scope of Stardust Crusaders . The fact is, in several installments of JoJo , at least until Diamond is Unbreakable , few characters have the dimension and nuance that Hol Horse has. He's interesting, unpredictable, and charming in a way that only JoJo's hypermasculine shonen roots could muster.

05. Foo Fighters

Anime - Jojo Stone Ocean
Anime – Jojo Stone Ocean

Another crucial Stone Ocean , Foo Fighters is one of the most compelling characters Araki has ever written. The frozen humanoid formed from countless plankton, Foo Fighters, is positioned as a character with human intellect but completely devoid of human experience. Jolyne and her crew first encounter her while she's working for Pucci, but she eventually becomes friends with JoJo .

This is where her role becomes truly irreplaceable. Through Foo Fighter's naiveté and sincerity, Araki explores the personalities of Jolyne and her entire entourage. When Foo Fighter dies, sacrificing her last strength to save Anasui, she becomes a constant figure (and an inseparable friend) to the main cast of Stone Ocean . The tragedy is compounded by the uncertainty of her fate in the new universe.

04. Wamuu

Anime - Jojo Battle Tendency
Anime – Jojo Battle Tendency

Of all the Pillar Men in Battle Tendency , Wamuu stands out. Wamuu is great precisely because he's different from the other Pillar Men: he has a set of principles he'll stick to no matter what. While he doesn't have a particularly high opinion of humans, he loves fighting and honor above all else; a human who fights fairly is good for him. Unfortunately, with how quickly the first two parts move—especially in their respective anime iterations—his presence is easily forgotten.

Wamuu is a central character in Battle Tendency for a central reason that's easily overlooked in retrospect: if he had, even for a moment, faltered in his dedication to honor, the role would have ended very differently. It's because of Wamuu's respect for Joseph (and, consequently, his willingness to hand over the antidote) that the latter survives until the end of the role. In our hearts, we know that Wamuu's honorable warrior spirit made Caesar's tragic death after one of JoJo easier for Joseph to bear as well.

03. Risotto

Anime - Jojo Golden Wind
Anime – Jojo Golden Wind

Risotto is beloved for his role in one of the most thrilling fights not only in Golden Wind , but in JoJo's overall. And, of course, his confrontation with Doppio/Diavolo is gruesome and brutal. It's obvious why he would be remembered above all else. However, what makes Risotto so special is the way he approaches the confrontation, which is much easier to forget.

For reasons of space, we'll avoid a lot of information dumps here. However, suffice it to say that Risotto's personality is remarkably stable, cunning, and serious. The fact that he's incredibly good at what he does only fuels the fire of his competent and bold leadership. He manages to organize the team into a threat, generating absurd pressure—not only on Team Bruno, but on Diavolo himself. Risotto brings much more to the table than fans often realize—enough that it's safe to say he's one of the standout performers in the role.

02. Yukako Yamagishi

Anime - Jojo Diamond is Unbreakable
Anime – Jojo Diamond is Unbreakable

Reception of Yukako Yamagishi often ranges from indifferent pleasure to extreme disdain. Few people embrace Yukako, however. Looking a little deeper than many fans give her credit for, she's much deeper than many fans realize. In some ways, yes, she's a classic example of the yandere archetype—but the way she's written elevates her to a genuine story of insecurity. Her motivation and obsession with being confined by the cage of female gender norms and expectations is ultimately quite opaque: her power is literally built around her hair.

While her behavior toward Koichi is obviously inexcusable, there's nuance to her portrayal—a nuance that only intensifies as she and Koichi resolve their differences, find understanding, and Yukako's role develops. Far from being a crutch for Koichi's own narrative development, Yukako is a brilliant demonstration of the mundane claustrophobia of femininity; moreover, she's also one of many characters whose exploration reminds fans of the life that pulses behind the scenes of Morioh.

01. Ermes

Anime - Jojo Stone Ocean
Anime – Jojo Stone Ocean

Ermes has some of the most original writing in the entire first JoJo universe. Starting with Diamond is Unbreakable , the characterization of JoJo became exponentially stronger than in the first three installments. Both Golden Wind and Stone Ocean carried this torch until the original universe's premature end. However, throughout virtually all of Part 6, Ermes serves as a critical counterpoint to Jolyne, and each plays a brilliant duo, drawing out the thorniest parts of the other's personality.

But there are simpler reasons to love Ermes. First, no one mentions how incredibly powerful Kiss is. During the final confrontation with Pucci, hers is the only Stand immune to Pucci's gravity. Second, her revenge arc with Sports Maxx is among the most compelling stories in Stone Ocean . It's not an easy honor to claim in a role filled with complicated backstories and ongoing consequences, but Ermes's story truly shines.
