Therefore the story follows Takaki Toono, who, over 18 years, from childhood, when he meets Akari Shinohara, to his youth and early adulthood. Unlike the original, which was 63 minutes long and divided into three parts, the live-action will be almost two hours long.
Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, known for music videos by artists such as Kenshi Yonezu and Gen Hoshino, this adaptation marks his first large-scale feature film. Finally Shinkai, who will not be directing, commented:
I'm excited to see how a young and passionate team is taking on '5 Centimeters per Second'. I couldn't replicate this work now, and I trust that this new version will bring something unique to the present.
