For me, Guilty Crown was a unfortunate anime. Everything we have achieved with this series, all the effort we put… I feel it was underestimated. It was a very frustrating experience, the director explained.
He also highlighted the impact of severe criticism:
We did amazing and challenging things, but in the end it was all about to call the anime "failed" and "trash." It was difficult to digest.
However, Araki was not limited to mourning. He made it clear that he still maintains the ambition to create an original anime that is an absolute success:
I always say I want to do an original anime that really impresses. I haven't done it yet, but I am determined to achieve this goal.
The director also said he has already identified the mistakes of Guilty Crown and is eager to prove that he has learned from them:
I know exactly where we made mistakes, but I haven't had the chance to show it in my work yet. I want to show what I am capable of in my next project!.
After Guilty Crown , Araki directed other original projects, such as Koutetsujou no Kabaneri , Bubble and Colors , as well as Shingeki adaptations to Kyojin produced by Wit Studio . However, his statements shared opinions among fans. While some argue that the anime was wronged, others point out obvious narrative flaws.
Check out the fan comments about Guilty Crown:
- The only thing I remember is that the protagonist lost his arm.
- Araki is amazing in the look, but its stories are medium. Perhaps it should focus on adaptations.
- If the script were better, Guilty Crown would be impeccable. The story is what really matters.
Despite the criticism, Guilty Crown is still remembered, which, in a way, is already a kind of success. Araki seems to be determined to overcome his past failures and deliver something that really marks the industry.
