The project remains under the direction of Taika Waititi , a filmmaker known for works such as Thor: Ragnarok , Thor: Love and Thunder , and the award-winning Jojo Rabbit Leonardo DiCaprio is also producing the project , reinforcing the team's strength. Despite countless failed attempts to adapt Akira to live-action over the past 25 years, everything indicates that this version is indeed moving forward.
The adaptation received a firm initial confirmation in 2019, with a 2021 release date from Warner Bros. However, the film was eventually pulled from the schedule, especially after Waititi prioritized directing Thor: Love and Thunder. Since then, silence has prevailed—until now.
It's worth remembering that Akira, originally directed by Katsuhiro Otomo and based on his own manga, is one of the most influential works in the history of anime and cinema. The possibility of seeing Neo-Tokyo reimagined in live-action has always generated high expectations. And although Lazar said "there's no news yet," the assurance that updates will be coming soon is the most solid confirmation in years that the project is still alive.
