Amiibo is the new NFC technology on the Nintendo Wii U!

Amiibo-e3-2014

According to the Nintendo Digital Event at E3, Reggie Fils-Aime announced a new way to use NFC technology: through Amiibos. These are miniatures of game characters that interact with the Wii U console, where the dolls send and receive data in this connection with the console, via the GamePad's NFC reader.

Amiibo will initially be released with compatibility with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but there will be figure interactivity, too, with Mario Kart 8 and several other games that will be launched compatible with this technology.

In 2015, a peripheral will be launched that will serve as a bridge for the miniature's interaction with the Nintendo 3DS.
