At Nintendo's E3 Digital Event , Reggie Fils-Aime announced a new way to use NFC technology: through Amiibos. These are miniature figures of game characters that interact with the Wii U console. The figures send and receive data through this connection to the console, via the GamePad's NFC reader.

Amiibo will initially launch with compatibility with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but there will also be figure interactivity with Mario Kart 8 and several other games that will be released compatible with this technology.

In 2015, a peripheral will be launched that will serve as a bridge for the miniature's interaction with the Nintendo 3DS.
