How an anime about an elf won the hearts of otaku

"Frieren and the Journey to the Beyond" (Sousou no Frieren) is a collaboration between Kanehito Yamada, responsible for the script, and Tsukasa Abe, in charge of the drawings. Published in Shogakukan's Shonen Sunday, one of the main magazines aimed at a male teenage audience in Japan, "Frieren" stands out even among more conventional series such as "Call of the Night", "Detective Conan" and "Komi Can't Communicate".

Frieren: A story that sparks curiosity:

The narrative takes place in a magical world, but instead of following the typical journey of a group of heroes seeking to defeat a great villain, "Frieren" explores the events that follow. As the years pass and the group members age, the long-lived elf Frieren is confronted with the finiteness of human life after the death of her former leader, Himmel.

The perception of time and emotional bonds is a central theme in "Frieren." Confronting regret for not making the most of moments with her loved ones, Frieren adopts a more open attitude, seeking to establish deeper connections with her new companions, such as the orphan Fern and Stark.

The success of "Frieren" among readers is undeniable, with millions of copies sold and recognition in important awards such as the "Kono Manga ga Sugoi," the Manga Taisho award, and the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize. This success quickly led to the production of an anime, announced in September 2022, just two years after the manga's publication began.

With the renowned Madhouse studio (“Overlord”) in charge of production and Kenichiro Sato (“Bocchi The Rock”) directing, the anime brilliantly captures the essence of the manga. In addition to high-quality animation, the soundtrack by Evan Call (“Violet Evergarden”) contributes to the immersive experience of Frieren's introspection.

Although “Frieren” features elements common to RPG-style series, its highlight lies in the emotional depth of the protagonist and the story itself. Frieren's journey is not just about overcoming challenges, but about reflecting on time and emotional bonds.

In this context, "Frieren" explores the value of time and human relationships, offering a narrative that invites reflection. Finally, the anime "Frieren and the Journey to the Beyond" is available on Crunchyroll with Portuguese subtitles and dubbing. Additionally, the manga "Frieren and the Journey to the Beyond" is published by Panini.
