Artificial intelligence ( AI) is invading several areas of entertainment, and the announcement of the original anime Twins Hinahima brought this debate to the otaku universe.
Created by KaKa Creation, the anime, which centers on two twin sisters who dream of becoming TikTok stars, is scheduled to premiere in spring 2025. The project promotes the concept of "assistive AI," highlighting the technology's usefulness for creators. Impressively, over 95% of the scenes were produced with AI.
In addition to AI tools, the team utilized software such as Adobe and Celsys products, widely used in traditional anime. The team hand-drawn the characters in the main visuals using Clip Studio Paint and then converted them to anime style with the help of AI. Final touches, made with Adobe Photoshop , Illustrator , and After Effects , ensured polish before the official release.
The story of Twins Hinahima follows Himari and Hinana, two high school twins who dream of going viral on social media. While filming a dance, the girls are transported to an unknown world. However, the massive use of AI in the creative process has already generated a wave of criticism, similar to the controversy surrounding the Akira last year.
Negative fan reaction to the use of AI in the anime:
Creating anime is a process that requires years of hard work, with animations drawn frame by frame. Software like Adobe Animate, ToonBoom Harmony, and TVPaint are traditional tools in this process. Therefore, many fans consider the adoption of AI a way to "cheat" artistic work, generating intense reactions on social media.
So, user @Manila_AI5 on X (formerly Twitter) criticized: “An AI-powered anime about being famous on TikTok? Seriously, is that the best they can do? Reduce effort? Of what? Real work and use talent?” . However, another comment from @SHIRO_116 highlighted: “Animators are already underpaid and treated poorly. AI will only make things worse.”
Ultimately, despite the controversy, Twins Hinahima promises to spark important discussions about the impact of technology on the creative industry. The premiere is scheduled for spring 2025, with more information to be released soon.
