My name is Rafael Alves, known as Shinzo. I created the AnimeNew website in 2009 to offer news about anime, manga, and games directly from Japan.

Through an anime commentary forum, fans gathered to discuss those anime that, at the end of their final episode, promised a sequel, but sadly, that sequel never arrived.

The debate has gained momentum among fans, who express their frustration and disappointment with these unfulfilled promises. Some argue that these series left plots unresolved and characters in uncertain situations, which generated a feeling of dissatisfaction among the audience.

Therefore, amidst the controversy, various opinions have emerged regarding the possible reasons behind these cancellations of sequels. Some speculate that financial problems or internal disputes within animation studios may have hindered the production of new seasons. Others suggest that a lack of interest or poor performance may have led to the decision not to continue the story.

However, despite the speculation and theories, uncertainty persists about the fate of these promised series. While some fans hold out hope for a continuation, others resign their expectations and simply lament the fate of these unfinished stories.

Aku no Hana

"A very good example that comes to mind is Aku no Hana , whose final episode devoted a considerable amount of time to showing a bunch of small clips of scenes that would have been in a hypothetical second season; however, the series ended up receiving very mixed reviews and failed in terms of Blu-Ray sales, so it never had a second season."

Check out the comments:

  • "Rokka no Yuusha, although I am aware of the situation with the light novel.".
  • "Obviously, I have to mention Noragami; that open ending was meant to lead to a third season.".
  • "Hoshiai no Sora, heavens, not having a sequel still really hurts to this day.".
  • "The fact that Hoshiai no Sora was supposed to be a two-part anime that was reduced to just one at the last second, with most of the first episode already released, and that they told the studio to end it where it was, without time to try and create a new ending, is insane. The director said he would ensure it had its ending and it never did, something I can't blame them for.".
  • "Deadman Wonderland, what the heck happened to the rest of the story?".
  • "Wonder Egg Priority tried to promise a second season, but anyone who has paid attention to the story knows that this will never be possible.".
  • "Maybe Drifters?".
  • "Land of the Lustrous ended practically on a cliffhanger, and knowing what happens after reading the manga, I really need that second season.".
  • "I don't know if this counts, but the second season of Youjo Senki was confirmed years ago, after the movie was released. Since then, it has disappeared without any new information being given about its cancellation or not.".

Other fans continued to mention anime that had announced sequels:

  • " Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun really promised a sequel. It's a shame it will never happen, since a second season would cover the rest of the manga."
  • “Btooom! is a great example of this. Not only did they end the series with a sequel finale and domestic market failure, but the manga creator tried to use milestones for a mobile game to entice fans to participate. But the game never reached its lofty goals, which led to the servers shutting down just a few months after the big launch.”.
  • “Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry”.
  • “Akatsuki no Yona”.
  • “Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, I miss this series every day.”.
  • "No Game No Life is probably the perfect example of a promised sequel that never materialized.".
  • "There's been no news about the Zombieland Saga movie in years.".
  • "Gangsta, that anime was too good.".
  • "Watamote. Even in the OVA, they mention things about a second season that never came.".
  • "Cautious Hero, there was a promise of a second season in the last episode, but it never happened.".
  • "Sankarea, I think.".
  • "And Yuri!!! on ICE is the perfect example.".
  • "Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san. If I'm not mistaken, they showed things from a second season in the final episode, but it never actually happened.".

Finally, comment if you remember any anime that promised a sequel?
