Anne Shirley has been teaching in Avonlea for a month now. She has high expectations for her students, having also been guided and encouraged by her own teacher when she was younger. The protagonist hopes that one of her students will become a writer. The influence of teacher Stacy on Anne's character development is notable. It was the affection and concern shown by her teacher in the past that motivated the protagonist to want to make a difference in the children's lives.
Besides teaching her students, Anne needs to guide Davy, who is a mischievous child who likes to cause trouble and annoy his sister.
