Anne Shirley Ep. 8: The Queen's Academy Entrance Exam

In episode 8 of Anne Shirley , released on May 24, the protagonist takes the Queen's Academy exam, but the results take longer than expected. Anne is apprehensive, fearing she won't achieve a satisfactory score, and spends her days anxiously waiting for the list of successful candidates to be released.

At the beginning of the episode, the anime briefly revisits Matthew's heart attack. Anne's adoptive father, now recovered, can no longer perform heavy work. As a result, the family hires Jerry, a young boy who helps them with the chores. The anime hasn't yet highlighted Jerry, but in the series Anne with an E , he was a recurring character.

Now, Anne is fifteen years old and is very anxious about the Queen's Academy entrance exam, which is getting closer and closer. While the character enjoys the wonders of growing up, she realizes that her worries never end and, in fact, become increasingly serious.

Queen's Academy Entrance Exam Result

After months of preparation, Anne finally takes the Queen's Academy entrance exam. Soon after, apprehension takes over as she waits for the results. Furthermore, the protagonist isn't the only one with emotions running high. It's moving to watch Marilla gradually feel what every mother feels: the sadness of watching her child grow up so quickly before her eyes. In Marilla's case, something else also bothers her: the possibility of Anne living far away if she gets into Queen's Academy.

Anne, overcome with fear of failing to get in with a satisfactory grade, loses her appetite and even her most distinctive characteristic: her talkative personality. When the list of successful candidates is finally released, she discovers that she passed first, along with Gilbert Blythe, her classmate, and her ranking leaves her overjoyed.

Anne Shirley's recital and the discovery of self-love

Anne is invited to perform in a concert at the White Sands Hotel. The recital is attended by professionals and wealthy individuals, which makes the protagonist doubt her abilities at the time of the performance. However, as soon as she notices Gilbert and Josie, she takes a deep breath and decides to begin, not wanting to make a fool of herself in front of them.

The audience gives her a standing ovation, amazed by her delivery and the profound interpretation of the quote. After all her achievements, Anne finally realizes her worth and begins to love herself just the way she is. Hence, the episode was titled " I Don't Want to Be Anyone Else But Myself ."

The ending of episode 8 was one of the anime's most beautiful. It also has a moving farewell tone, as we know Anne will no longer see Professor Stacy, a figure who played a significant role in her life, nor will she see her close friend Diana Barry as often. As usual, Anne Shirley teaches us a lot in each episode and also moves us with her perspective on life. Furthermore, the animation, by The Answer Studio, is reminiscent of paintings on canvas and further enhances the beauty of the narrative.

In episode 9, titled "The Next Best Thing to Trying Your Best and Winning Is Trying Your Best and Losing," Anne goes to Queen's Academy and makes new friends. She also dedicates herself to her studies to earn her teaching license and a scholarship. The episode will premiere on May 31st on the Crunchyroll streaming platform, with Portuguese subtitles available. Check out the preview on the anime's official channel.
