The Beginning After The End – Arthur's Past

The Orphanage
In the past, Arthur was known as Grey and lived on a dystopian, futuristic Earth. An orphan, he grew up in an orphanage with his childhood friends, Nico Sever and Cecilia. Due to the orphanage's poverty, Grey and Nico became involved in criminal activities, such as robbing the wealthy, to help meet the orphanage's needs. Their lives seemed to follow this rhythm until one day, Grey saved Cecilia from an attack when her ki went out of control. This event marked the beginning of a strong, seemingly unbreakable friendship between the three.
However, everything changed when Cecilia was nearly kidnapped by a mysterious organization that called her "legacy." Even after managing to save her, Grey returned to the orphanage and found the director dead, which plunged his mind into a quest for revenge. Determined to gain power to exact his revenge, Grey enrolled in the military academy, where he began intense training. Nico and Cecilia followed him, but the relationship between the group began to cool, especially after Grey distanced himself from his feelings for Cecilia so as not to jeopardize his friendship with Nico.
During training, Grey met Vera, his teacher, who became a mother figure to him. However, the distance between him and his friends only increased. The situation worsened when Cecilia was kidnapped by the same organization, leading Grey and Nico to search for her. But, upon realizing that the government was behind the kidnapping, Grey believed there was nothing more he could do, which led to a major fight between the friends and resulted in their separation.
The fight for the Throne
Months later, a competition to elect the new king begins. Grey, still trying to reconnect with Nico, encounters Cecilia at the competition and believes Nico is merely delusional. Both advance to the final.
Before the final fight, Nico escapes and reveals that he was held captive. He explains that Cecilia was being manipulated by an organization led by Vera, and that she was used by her due to her naiveté. Nico presents evidence and reveals that he has a plan to rescue Cecilia.
A distraught Grey can't believe any of it, believing Nico is lying and that his evidence wasn't very convincing before heading to the combat arena for his final fight against Cecilia. However, Grey discovered that everything Nico said was true, and as a consequence, it all ended in Cecilia's death. Seeking freedom and not wanting to be treated as a weapon, she let Grey's sword kill her. Grey also saw Vera with the man who had kidnapped Cecilia when they were children
All of this caused his friendship with Nico to break down and left him with an existential void. After that, he started a war that destroyed an entire country (although it's unknown what role he played), presumably Vera's country and the one responsible for the legacy.
The Grey King
Finally, throughout his later life as King Grey, he avoided any and all long-term bonds, seeing them as weaknesses that others could exploit. Furthermore, in doing so, he hardened his heart and shut down his emotions. He lived this way until the moment of his death, and when he thought it was all over, he reincarnated as Arthur Leywin, at which point he decided to live a completely different life from the one he had lived in his previous world.
