Avatar: The Last Airbender fans will have to wait a little longer. Paramount Pictures announced that the highly anticipated animated film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will not be released until October 9, 2026. Initially scheduled for October 2025 and then January 2026, the film has been delayed again. However, the news came with the official reveal of the project's logo.
Reunion with the heroes of the Avatar Nation
The plot will be set years after the events of the acclaimed original cartoon, which aired between 2005 and 2008. Thus, we will see Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko now as young adults facing new challenges. This will be the first theatrical feature film produced by Avatar Studios , a label created in 2021 by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko —the original creators—in partnership with Nickelodeon.
The film is directed by Lauren Montgomery , who worked on "Avatar" and "The Legend of Korra," alongside co-director William Mata . The script is being written in direct collaboration with the series' creators, which is sure to excite fans even more.
Renewed cast, but with purpose
While none of the original voice actors will return, the recasting decision was made to more accurately reflect the series' cultural roots, which draw inspiration from Asian and Indigenous traditions. Actress Mae Whitman , the original voice of Katara, publicly supported the change. After all, as she herself said, "it's important for us to evolve and seek what is most true and honest."
Production is being split between Flying Bark Productions (Australia) and Studio Mir (South Korea). The film will use traditional 2D animation with touches of CGI to maintain the series' iconic visual style, but with a modern cinematic feel.
