SBT has just acquired Avatar: The Legend of Korra for its programming schedule, airing it during "Bom Dia & Cia," something that surprised fans since Rede Globo had acquired the previous version, "Avatar: The Last Airbender," but this didn't even come close to causing controversy. The reason for the "talk" surrounding the show was its ending.
(SPOILER ALERT) The Legend of Korra had 4 seasons aired and produced by Nickelodeon, and it's in the 3rd season that all the controversy begins. After finally ending her relationship with Mako, Korra and Asami's friendship begins to be shown in focus during the second half of the 3rd season and throughout the 4th. In the last episode, in the VERY LAST SECONDS, Korra and Asami look deeply into each other's eyes, hold hands, and go together to the spirit world.
After the controversial ending aired, screenwriter Michael Dante DiMartino, one of the creators of the animation, confirmed the homosexual relationship between Korra and Asami on his blog, and thanks to this, several websites attacked the show.
"SBT Announces Cartoon with Lesbian Romance." "Lesbian Cartoon to be Shown on SBT." "SBT Premieres Cartoon That Caused Controversy Due to Lesbian Couple." AND ALL THE NEWS IS LIKE THIS, not to mention that they even use fan-made montages of a kiss between Korra and Asami (which never happened).
To begin with, "The Legend of Korra" never emphasized a lesbian relationship; the main story shows the importance of friendship, teaches not to give up with the main character always overcoming challenges, teaches respect for values, shows the evolution of a society, has its funny moments, its sad moments. A very well-crafted and nostalgic plot for those who watched "Aang," but even so, the media's focus is only on the "lesbian relationship.".
Not to mention that there are even sensationalists who go even further, claiming that the change in the show's time slot in the United States was due to the romance. That wasn't even close! The time slot change was due to the fights, which were considered somewhat violent for all audiences.
So, parents, don't worry about your children watching "The Legend of Korra" because the show is great, and if your concern is about the child's sexual orientation, you can rest assured that the adventures of Korra and her friends will not influence them in any way.
