Blue Lock fans have been complaining a lot about the drop in animation quality in season 2 compared to the first, and the series' producer has provided explanations for these changes.
By 2023, Blue Lock had become the best-selling manga in Japan, with over 10 million copies sold, reaching a total of over 40 million copies sold. Part of this success was due to the anime adaptation released that same year. The first season introduced the Blue Lock program, with Ego Jinpachi determined to create the world's best striker.
With a finale that left fans eager for more, the second season was one of the most anticipated premieres of fall 2024. However, a shocking drop in animation quality has driven many fans away. Critics point to the action scenes, which once flowed well, now featuring static images and abrupt transitions, resembling a PowerPoint .
Blue Lock producer Ryoya Arisawa answered fan questions on the anime's official Instagram, where he commented on concerns regarding the animation changes.
Blue Lock Season 2 Animation Change?
Asked if he was satisfied with the adaptation, Arisawa said:
“I’m far from satisfied… Just as Isagi and the others tirelessly strive to become stronger, the same goes for me and everyone involved in the BLUE LOCK .”
Arisawa explained that the change in animation is linked to the characters' transition from a closed facility to a large stage. There was an effort to better represent the audience and the outside world, as well as improve elements such as visual sequences and effects.
However, episode 2 animator Reyes commented that he was treated unfairly at 8bit, with low pay and a lack of time. According to Reyes, the final work was different than planned, which would explain the static scenes in the first episodes.
Ultimately, it's clear that, despite Arisawa's justifications, there are disagreements about what went wrong in the second season. Stay tuned to AnimeNew for more news about Blue Lock and other anime!
