Synopsis
The story begins with Japan's elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, prompting the Japan Football Union to launch a program to recruit high school players to begin training for the 2022 World Cup. Isagi Yoichi, a striker, receives an invitation to this program shortly after his team lost the chance to advance to the Nationals because he passed to his less skilled teammate—who failed—without attempting to score the decisive goal himself. His coach will be Ego Jinpachi, who intends to "end Japan's failed football" by introducing a radical new training regime: isolating 300 young strikers in a prison-like institution called "Blue Lock" and putting them through rigorous training with the goal of creating "the best striker in the world."
The Blue Lock anime is scheduled to premiere this year.
Kaneshiro and Nomura launched the Blue Lock manga in Weekly Shounen in August 2018. The series won the "Best Shounen Manga" award at Kodansha's "45th Annual Manga Awards" event last year.
