The latest sales report from Shonen Jump confirmed that Boruto is facing its worst commercial performance since its debut in 2016. The direct sequel to Naruto, despite the weight of Masashi Kishimoto's name, is failing to maintain the same appeal as the original work and is experiencing significant drops in sales with each new volume.

Volume 5 of Boruto Two Blue Vortex sold just over 100,000 copies, the lowest number ever recorded in the franchise. This steady decline is worrying fans and raising questions about the series' future in the Japanese market.

Boruto's performance drops with each release

Released in 2016 as a direct sequel to Naruto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations promised to expand the universe created by Kishimoto. However, data released by Oricon shows a declining sales trajectory.

The latest figures indicate that Two Blue Vortex #5 sold only 10,301 copies in its third week after release, totaling 76,566 copies sold. For comparison, previous volumes such as NNG18 and TBV1 surpassed 84,000 and 79,000 copies respectively in the same period.

Factors that explain the decline

Despite Kishimoto's supervision, the story is creatively driven by Mikio Ikemoto, the author's former assistant. However, many fans point out that the narrative did not achieve the pace or intensity that characterized Naruto, and this perception has alienated part of the audience.

Furthermore, recurring criticisms mention unengaging plots and uneven character development, which may be contributing to the decline in interest.

The drop in physical sales is generating speculation about possible changes or even the cancellation of the series, a scenario that would be a significant blow to the Naruto brand. However, not everything is negative: in the digital environment, Boruto maintains its relevance.

On the Manga Plus platform, Two Blue Vortex holds the third position among the most read titles, behind only established successes like One Piece and Chainsaw Man. This indicates that the public still shows interest, especially in the online format.
