Shonen Jump's latest sales report confirmed that Boruto is facing its worst commercial performance since its debut in 2016. The direct sequel to Naruto, despite the weight of Masashi Kishimoto's name, fails to maintain the same appeal as the original work and accumulates significant drops with each new volume.

Volume 5 of Boruto Two Blue Vortex sold just over 100,000 copies, the lowest number ever recorded for the franchise. This steady decline worries fans and raises questions about the series' future in the Japanese market.

Boruto's performance drops with each release

Released in 2016 as a direct sequel to Naruto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations promised to expand the universe created by Kishimoto. However, data released by Oricon shows a declining sales trajectory.

The latest survey indicates that Two Blue Vortex #5 sold only 10,301 copies in the third week after its release, totaling 76,566 copies sold. For comparison, previous volumes like NNG18 and TBV1 surpassed 84,000 and 79,000 copies sold in the same period.

Factors that explain the decline

Despite Kishimoto's supervision, the story is creatively led by Mikio Ikemoto, the author's former assistant. However, many fans point out that the narrative hasn't reached the pace or power that characterized Naruto, and this perception has alienated some audiences.

Furthermore, recurring reviews mention unengaging plots and uneven character development, which may be contributing to the decline in interest.

The drop in physical sales is fueling speculation about possible changes or even cancellation of the series, a scenario that would be a significant blow to the Naruto brand. However, not everything is negative: in the digital environment, Boruto remains relevant.

On the Manga Plus platform, Two Blue Vortex ranks third among the most-read titles, behind only established hits like One Piece and Chainsaw Man. This indicates that the public still shows interest, especially in the online format.
