Monster Hunter Frontier-G has been quite successful on the Wii U , Xbox 360 , and PS3 in Japan, reaching 3 million copies sold. Although this game hasn't yet enjoyed worldwide commercial success, it's quite intriguing to think about what it would be like to transform Monster Hunter into an MMORPG with a monthly subscription fee.
For many Monster Hunter fans, this transformation isn't hard to see. Unfortunately, there's never been any indication of a release outside of Japan, but this week in an internal interview Capcom gave a glimmer of hope that Western territories might be on the agenda for a possible release.
The website Siliconera translated an interview with Yoshinori Ono from Capcom about the "Monster Hunter MMORPG"
"The 'G' in the Monster Hunter title indicates that it's compatible with multiple platforms, such as PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, and PC. We are also planning to extend it to PS Vita.
The main reason we've increased connectivity across multiple platforms is because we have our sights set on distribution outside of Japan in the future. We can't simply release a game as is; we need to adapt all the necessary services to the unique characteristics of each region. And to prepare for that, we've broadened our reach by releasing on several different platforms."
Monster Hunter Frontier G is actually an expansion of Monster Hunter Frontier Online, which was originally released for PC in 2007 and then for Xbox 360 in 2010.
Remember that this same challenge is being faced with Skyrim, which is already in beta testing. Personally, I find this transition from a game to an MMORPG quite complicated. In this transition, many game characteristics are usually lost, and the biggest challenge is to show something new and unique, not only to fans but also to new players. I hope Capcom works very well on these details that, in an MMORPG, make all the difference between success and failure.
Hey guys, would you like an MMORPG based on Monster Hunter, with a monthly subscription? To give you some food for thought, I'll leave the EPIC trailer that accompanied the announcement of Monster Hunter Frontier G on PS3 and Wii U last year below.
