The legendary Carmen Sandiego is about to return to the spotlight. After four decades since the launch of the first game in the series, the reboot of the franchise has a date set: March 4, 2025. The character, known for her unmistakable red costume and skills as a master criminal, gained notoriety in the 1980s. However, the new version of the game, in addition to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the franchise, presents a modern proposal: players will take on the role of Carmen herself, living global adventures and solving mysteries.
A new angle on the saga of Carmen Sandiego
The reboot follows the narrative line of the animated series released in 2019 on Netflix, where Carmen abandons her criminal career to face the organization VILE (International League of Villains). Thus, in the game, this transformation is reflected in the gameplay. The player will be challenged to hunt down other criminal masters, using technological tools and strategies worthy of a secret agent.
The title is not limited to the main campaign. There will be classic game modes, inspired by the challenges of the first game in the series, “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego”, released in 1985. In addition, the Deluxe version will offer extra content, including a special commemorative mission and cosmetic items.
Early release for Netflix subscribers
Although the global debut is scheduled for March, Netflix subscribers will be able to try the game first, on mobile devices, starting January 28, 2025. This exclusivity reinforces the platform's expansion in the games market, making the title available on iOS and Android .
For those who prefer consoles or PCs, the game will be available via Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Pre-sales are now active, with 20% discounts on the Deluxe edition, which includes a digital artbook and the official soundtrack.
Collectors will not be left out
In addition to the digital versions, Gameloft announced a commemorative physical edition for Nintendo Switch and PS5, which will be released in April 2025. This edition includes the base game, content from the Deluxe version and exclusive items such as location stickers and a global map.
Carmen Sandiego's return to video games marks a significant moment for the franchise. Combining nostalgic elements with a contemporary approach, the game promises to win over veterans and new players alike. So, it remains to be seen whether this new adventure will live up to the legacy of the most famous thief in the gaming world.
