The legendary Carmen Sandiego is about to return to the spotlight. Four decades after the release of the first game in the series, the franchise reboot has a release date: March 4, 2025. Developed with a focus on an engaging narrative, the game promises to attract new fans while rekindling the nostalgia of old fans.

The character, known for her distinctive red costume and mastermind skills, gained notoriety in the 1980s. However, the new version of the game, in addition to celebrating the franchise's 40th anniversary, presents a modern approach: players will take on the role of Carmen herself, experiencing global adventures and solving mysteries.
A new angle on the Carmen Sandiego saga
The reboot follows the narrative of the 2019 animated series released on Netflix, in which Carmen abandons her criminal career to face the organization VILE (International League of Villains). In the game, this transformation is reflected in the gameplay. Players will be challenged to hunt down other criminal masterminds using technological tools and strategies worthy of a secret agent.
The title isn't limited to the main campaign. There will be classic game modes, inspired by the challenges of the first game in the series, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego," released in 1985. Additionally, the Deluxe version will offer extra content, including a special commemorative mission and cosmetic items.
Early release for Netflix subscribers
Although the global premiere is scheduled for March, Netflix subscribers will be able to try the game first on mobile devices starting January 28, 2025. This exclusivity reinforces the platform's expansion into the gaming market, making the title available on iOS and Android.
For those who prefer consoles or PCs, the game will be available via Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders are now live, with 20% off the Deluxe Edition, which includes a digital artbook and the official soundtrack.
Collectors won't be left out
In addition to the digital versions, Gameloft announced a commemorative physical edition for Nintendo Switch and PS5, which will be released in April 2025. This edition includes the base game, Deluxe version content, and exclusive items such as location stickers and a global map.
Carmen Sandiego's return to video games marks a significant moment for the franchise. Combining nostalgic elements with a contemporary approach, the game promises to captivate both veterans and new players. So, it remains to be seen whether this new adventure will live up to the legacy of gaming's most famous thief.
