Square Enix has confirmed the main differences between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of Dragon Quest I & II. Scheduled for release in late October, the HD-2D remake will offer the same narrative experience across all platforms, but introduces technical and compatibility changes that deserve attention.

Additionally, the company revealed how save bonuses linked to Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will work, guaranteeing rewards even for those who switch consoles. Below, learn the key details and what to expect from each version.

What's new in Dragon Quest I & II for the Switch and Switch 2 versions?

According to official information, the main difference lies in cross-platform compatibility. The Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest I & II will be exclusive to the new console, while the Switch edition will be compatible with both devices.

Therefore, those who purchase the Switch edition will also be able to play on the Switch 2. However, the opposite is not true. The version developed specifically for the Switch 2 does not run on the previous console, either physically or digitally. This detail directly impacts players who plan to migrate platforms in the coming months.

Additionally, graphics performance varies between the two versions. The Switch 2 version features improved rendering, taking advantage of the new hardware's superior processing power. However, the game's content remains identical: the story, characters, and available items are the same across all versions.

Save data cannot be transferred between versions

Another important point concerns save data. Square Enix has clarified that it won't be possible to transfer saves between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. This applies both to those who want to start on the Switch and migrate later, and to those who plan to play alternately on both consoles.

The system recognizes each version as a separate software. Therefore, even if the player purchases both editions, they won't be able to integrate their data and will have to start from scratch when switching consoles.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D bonuses work in both versions

Despite the limited save size, there's good news for those concerned about the bonuses offered by Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. According to Square Enix, the freebies linked to the previous game can be redeemed regardless of the version chosen for Dragon Quest I & II.

This ensures that players who completed the third title on the Switch version, for example, will still be able to receive the bonuses when purchasing the new remake on Switch 2. This flexibility offers an added incentive for those who already follow the trilogy in HD-2D.

Release and confirmed platforms

The HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest I & II officially arrives on October 30, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). The Steam version will be delayed by one day, to October 31.

Square Enix emphasizes that all editions will maintain the same narrative and gameplay structure, with differences focused solely on performance and cross-platform compatibility.
