Japanese publishers Kodansha , Shueisha , Shogakukan , and Kadokawa have filed a lawsuit against the American company Cloudflare . According to reports, the companies allege that Cloudflare distributes data to pirate manga , infringing on the copyrights of the publishers in Japan.
Therefore, the companies are seeking an injunction for around 460 million yen ( approximately US$4 million ) in compensation for damages.
Kodansha alleges Cloudflare 's policy of requiring only an email address for free registration allows pirate websites to conceal their identity.
Reports from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and the Kyodo news service stated that Cloudflare has contracts with major piracy websites to distribute data from servers in Japan, even if the administrators of the pirate sites are located abroad.
Finally, the websites supposedly distribute around 4,000 manga titles. The most popular are One Piece , Attack on Titan , and Kingdom, with over 300 million hits per month.
