Crunchyroll hits a surprising new subscriber record

According to an interview in The Hollywood Reporter , Hiroki Totoki , the new CEO of Sony , said that Crunchyroll hit a new subscriber record in April, with over 10 million subscriptions on the platform. In addition to the growth of its catalog, a large part of this new record is also a result of the price reduction that Crunchyroll implemented in 2022.

Initially, the rights to Crunchyroll belonged to Otter Media, a subsidiary of AT&T . However, Sony acquired the rights to the platform in 2021 after purchasing it for $1.175 billion. Sony already owned another anime-focused streaming service called Funimation, so the acquisition of Crunchyroll allowed for the unification of the two platforms.

Nowadays, Crunchyroll is the most sought-after and requested streaming service for anime viewers, as its catalog includes the most famous titles, such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Jujutsu Kaisen , One Piece , and many others. Furthermore, the platform created the Anime Awards , which is the largest annual anime awards ceremony known to date.
