Crunchyroll Hits Surprising New Subscriber Record

According to an interview in The Hollywood Reporter , Hiroki Totoki Sony 's new CEO , said that Crunchyroll broke a new subscriber record in April, reaching over 10 million subscribers. In addition to the growth of its catalog, much of this new record is also a result of the price reduction that Crunchyroll made available in 2022.

Initially, Crunchyroll rights were owned by AT&T 's Otter Media . However, Sony acquired the rights to the platform in 2021 after purchasing it for $1.175 billion. Sony already owned another anime-focused streaming service, Funimation, so the acquisition of Crunchyroll allowed the two platforms to be unified.

Crunchyroll is currently the most sought-after streaming service for anime viewers, boasting the most popular titles, including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Jujutsu Kaisen , One Piece , and many others. The platform also created the Anime Awards , the largest annual anime awards show to date.
