Crunchyroll has become the most popular anime streamer in recent years and the platform continues to grow as it acquires more subscribers for its service. Since forming a union with Funimation , the platform has further expanded its anime release catalog. As a result of this growth, Crunchyroll gained millions of subscribers in 2023 .
Crunchyroll reaches surprising new subscriber record
According to an interview in The Hollywood Reporter , Hiroki Totoki , the new CEO of Sony , said that Crunchyroll broke a new subscriber record in April, having more than 10 million subscriptions on the platform. In addition to the growth of its catalogue, a large part of this new record is also the result of the price reduction that Crunchyroll made available in 2022.
Initially, the rights to Crunchyroll belonged to AT&T 's Otter Media . However, Sony gained the rights to the platform in 2021 after purchasing it for 1.175 billion dollars. Eventually, Sony already had ownership of another anime-focused streaming company known as Funimation, so the acquisition of Crunchyroll allowed the two platforms to be unified.
Nowadays, Crunchyroll is the most popular and requested streaming service among anime viewers, as its catalog includes the most famous titles, such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Jujutsu Kaisen , One Piece and many others. Furthermore, the platform created the Anime Awards , which is the biggest annual anime awards known to date.
