In a recent interview, series creator Yukinobu Tatsu revealed that his inspiration for the manga came from the works of Junji Ito and Ultraman. Yes, that's right! Junji Ito, the master of horror, and Ultraman are the big influences behind Dandadan. So, if you're a fan of the series, you already know who to thank!
During an interview in Japan, Tatsu commented on his inspirations:
“I sometimes refer to the works of Junji Ito,” he admitted. “I ask myself, 'Why is this cartoon so scary?' I notice that his illustrations are extremely detailed and full of lines. Still, he has scenes that make me laugh and think, 'Isn't this some kind of joke?' I think fear and humor go together.”
Additionally, Tatsu mentioned that he looks to Ultraman for inspiration when creating Dandadan's aliens and monsters:
I really like Narita Toru, known for his designs in Ultraman. When he was a kid, he thought Ultraman was just a superhero story. But as I looked back at Toru's designs as I grew up, I discovered... a raw, scary element that I really appreciate.
If you're not yet familiar with the Dandadan series, there's time to check out the manga before the anime releases on Netflix. Finally, the series is available on the Shonen Jump .
