In a recent interview, the series creator, Yukinobu Tatsu , revealed that his inspiration for the manga came from the works of Junji Ito and Ultraman. Yes, that's right! Junji Ito, the master of horror, and Ultraman are the major influences behind Dandadan. So, if you're a fan of the series, you know who to thank!
During an interview in Japan, Tatsu commented on his inspirations:
“I sometimes refer to the works of Junji Ito,” he admitted. “I wonder, ‘Why is this drawing so scary?’ I realize that his illustrations are extremely detailed and full of lines. Even so, he has scenes that make me laugh and think, ‘Isn’t this some kind of joke?’ I think fear and humor go hand in hand.”
Furthermore, Tatsu mentioned that he draws inspiration from Ultraman when creating the aliens and monsters of Dandadan:
I really like Narita Toru, known for his designs in Ultraman. When I was a child, I thought Ultraman was just a superhero story. But when I revisited Toru's designs as an adult, I discovered… a raw and unsettling element that I truly appreciate.
If you're not yet familiar with the Dandadan series, there's still time to check out the manga before the anime's release on Netflix. Finally, the series is available on the Shonen Jump .
