In a recent interview, series creator Yukinobu Tatsu revealed that his inspiration for the manga came from the works of Junji Ito and Ultraman. Yes, that's right! Junji Ito, the master of horror, and Ultraman are the major influences behind Dandadan. So, if you're a fan of the series, you already know who to thank!
During an interview in Japan, Tatsu commented on his inspirations:
“I sometimes refer to Junji Ito’s work,” he admitted. “I ask myself, ‘Why is this drawing so scary?’ I realize his illustrations are incredibly detailed and line-heavy. Yet he has scenes that make me laugh and think, ‘Isn’t this some kind of joke?’ I think fear and humor go hand in hand.”
Additionally, Tatsu mentioned that he draws inspiration from Ultraman when creating the aliens and monsters of Dandadan:
I really like Narita Toru, known for his Ultraman designs. When I was a kid, I thought Ultraman was just a superhero story. But when I revisited Toru's designs as an adult, I discovered... a raw, creepy element that I truly appreciate.
If you're not yet familiar with the Dandadan series, there's still time to check out the manga before the anime premieres on Netflix. Finally, the series is available on the Shonen Jump .
