Death Stranding will gain anime adaptation

Vogue Japan published on Wednesday, 28, an exclusive interview with Hideo Kojima , creator of the game "Metal Gear" . In it, Kojima states that he is developing an anime movie from Death Stranding .

In the interview, the producer and writer talks about the current market of the games and makes a forecast , according to him, we are running for a future in which the borders between movies and games will disappear.

“I grew up at a time when there were no games. This influence is also evident in my work, which is often described as“ cinematic visual expression ”. As I had no preconceived notions about games, I naturally began to apply the knowledge and techniques I acquired in novels and films to game development.” Says Kojima at the beginning of the interview.

Plans for adaptation of Death Stranding

And about film adaptations , Kojima said: “I am also currently working on a live-action film adaptation and Death Stranding. Recently, when it comes to game video adaptations, there were works such as“ The Last of Us ”that were viewed keeping the original plot intact, and works such as“ The Super Mario Bros. Movie ”which is like a service for game fans. Each of these works has their own merits, but as a movie lover, I want to look for the expression of cinema. Our goal is to create“ Death Stranding ”that can only be done in a movie, such as winning awards at the“ Cannes Film Festival ”and the“ International Film Festival of Venice ”. In fact, we are currently working on an anime adaptation.

Death Stranding 2

's plan for Death Stranding adaptation is large and has several phases, according to him "[…] the boundaries between games and movies will disappear. And that's what I'm looking for." He adds that: “[…] a game in which a person who watches the screen behind is playing can involuntarily think that he is watching a movie. By employing the same features and creators of the movie, we are trying to create this work.”

Exploring beyond movies and games

And the plan doesn't stop there. There are more experiments for the franchise, he said: “By the way, the third phase is to create a new form that is a game and a movie. The fourth phase is to create an IP in the movie and turn it into a game, or create something completely new. We are still in the stage where we finally reach the moon surface, but it is a distant and endless goal of going to Pluto from here.”

Kojima stated in the interview that the way people consume content is changing. For him new works that arise from today need to consider this change. He stated: “[…] Many people now watch movies that were originally seen on the big screen of theaters on small devices such as smartphones. This is the same for games, music, novels and manga.”

Also, the way we consume videos of a few seconds changes the habit of standing in front of a screen for hours. For the author, some works are already adapting and changing their gaze on the public. According to Kojima: “When you think about it, you can see how the NHK morning TV series of“ 15 minutes every day ”was innovative.”
