Death Stranding to get anime adaptation

Vogue Japan published this Wednesday, the 28th, an exclusive interview with Hideo Kojima , creator of the game "Metal Gear" . In it, Kojima states that he is developing an anime film based on the game Death Stranding .

In the interview, the producer and writer talks about the current gaming market and makes a prediction , according to him, we are running towards a future in which the boundaries between films and games will disappear.

"I grew up in a time when there were no games. This influence is also evident in my work, which is often described as 'cinematic visual expression.' Since I had no preconceived notions about games, I naturally began applying the knowledge and techniques I gained from novels and films to game development," Kojima says at the beginning of the interview.

Plans for adapting Death Stranding

Regarding film adaptations , Kojima said: "I'm also currently working on a live-action film adaptation of A24 and Death Stranding. Recently, when it comes to video game adaptations, there have been works like "The Last of Us," which were visualized while keeping the original storyline intact, and works like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which are like a service to game fans. Each of these works has its own merits, but as a film lover, I want to pursue the expression of cinema. Our goal is to create a "Death Stranding" that can only be done in a film, like winning awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival. In fact, we're currently working on an anime adaptation."

Death Stranding 2

plan for the Death Stranding adaptation is extensive and encompasses several phases. According to him, " [...] the boundaries between games and films will disappear. And that's what I'm aiming for." He adds, "[...] a game that someone watching from behind might involuntarily think they're watching a film. By employing the same resources and creators as the film, we're trying to create that work."

Exploring beyond movies and games

And the plan doesn't stop there. There are more experiments in store for the franchise, he said: "By the way, the third phase is to create a new format that's both a game and a movie. The fourth phase is to create an IP in the movie and turn it into a game, or create something completely new. We're still at the stage where we've finally reached the surface of the moon, but that's a distant and endless goal, like going to Pluto from here."

Kojima stated in the interview that the way people consume content is changing. He believes that new works emerging from now on need to take this shift into account. He stated: "[...] many people now watch films that were originally only seen on the big screen in theaters on small devices like smartphones. This is the same for games, music, novels, and manga."

Furthermore, the way we consume short-second videos is changing the habit of sitting in front of a screen for hours. For the author, some works are already adapting and changing their perspective on audiences. According to Kojima: "When you think about it, you can see how innovative NHK's morning TV series '15 Minutes Every Day' was."
