Director Gareth Edwards has decided to step down from directing Godzilla 2 , Deadline revealed. According to sources close to the production, the departure was amicable, without behind-the-scenes conflict, and is linked to Edwards' involvement in new, more ambitious projects.

The filmmaker is currently focused on Star Wars: Rogue One , set for release on December 16th. The film promises to offer a fresh take on the saga's universe, standing out for its more intense and realistic approach. As a result of this focus, Edwards has chosen not to split his attention with another blockbuster at the moment.

Another detail that reinforces the change in production is the official postponement of Godzilla 2 to March 22, 2019. The new date signals that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. intend to calmly find a new director who can lead the project with the same grandeur expected by fans of the franchise.

So far, no name has been confirmed as a replacement . However, with the success of the first film and the growth of the so-called "MonsterVerse," it's expected that the choice of the new director will be strategic to maintain the hype and coherence of the shared universe between Godzilla, Kong, and other iconic creatures.
