The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5, 2025, and promises to transform the brand's portable experience with technical improvements, a new design, and a host of new features. The screen now measures 7.9 inches, surpassing previous models in size and quality, with HDR technology and support for 120 FPS in handheld mode. In TV mode, the console reaches 4K resolution at 60 FPS, thanks to the new performance-optimized dock.
Graphics performance, however, is only part of the improvement. The console now features 256 GB of internal storage—eight times more than the original Switch—and faster processing, favoring shorter load times and smoother gameplay.
The base also features a cooler, improving ventilation during extended sessions. The device's rear stand has been redesigned and allows for adjustable screen angles, making it easier to use in tabletop mode.
Nintendo has redesigned the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers. The company has increased the size of the controllers and improved their comfort. Players can now use them as a mouse, a feature designed for shooters and strategy games.
The company also adopted a magnetic connection on the sides of the console, ensuring a more secure fit. Additionally, it included a "Chat" button on the controllers, allowing voice chat and screen sharing with friends—a feature available only to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
New accessories expand interaction and connectivity options
The Nintendo Switch 2 also boasts a social and interactive experience. Nintendo has included an official camera with the Switch 2. Players will use the accessory for video calls, livestreams, and facial recognition games. The company will sell the camera separately, as well as the new Pro Controller, which features an ergonomic layout and more precise controls.
Among the new features is Game Share, which allows players to share a single game locally between multiple consoles. This means that one user simply needs to own the game for the others to join in, without the need for multiple copies. To enjoy real-time communication with the Chat button and screen sharing during gameplay, you'll need to have an active Nintendo Switch Online account.
Nintendo has updated the Switch 2 Miis. The avatars feature more realistic features, expanded facial customization options, and refined animations. Nintendo has also added GameCube games to its digital library, under the new Switch 2-exclusive category on Nintendo Switch Online.
Launch titles include Mario Kart World and reworked classics
The Nintendo Switch 2's debut will be accompanied by a diverse lineup of titles. The main release is Mario Kart World, a new installment in Nintendo's racing franchise.
In addition, games such as Split Fiction, Hogwarts Legacy, Hitman, Bravely Default HD, Yakuza 0 and Cyberpunk 2077 will be available. However, still in 2025, the console will receive productions such as Hyrule Warriors: Impression, Elden Ring, Hades 2, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
More titles will be revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse event, scheduled for April 3rd and 4th. The list of games is expected to grow with new releases and successful re-releases adapted to the console's new capabilities.
In addition to the new games, several original Nintendo Switch titles will receive graphical upgrades and new modes on the Switch 2. Enhanced versions of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Jamboree, Metroid Prime 4, and Pokémon: Legends ZA have been confirmed. These upgrades will require additional payment, but will allow you to take advantage of the new hardware's graphical improvements and features.
Backward compatibility ensures a smooth transition for original Switch owners
Backward compatibility with original Nintendo Switch games is one of the new console's biggest advantages. Users can migrate their digital library to the Switch 2 without needing to repurchase. The company promises full compatibility, including physical and digital games, as well as integration with existing Nintendo accounts.
Nintendo Switch Online will also be expanded. There will be a new section exclusively for Switch 2, with optimized games, expanded social features, and access to the classic GameCube library. This content requires an active subscription to the service.
In Brazil, the price is still subject to tax, but the console will cost US$449. In Brazil, it's expected to cost around R$4,500. However, Nintendo will sell the camera and pro controller separately, but has not yet confirmed the prices of the accessories. Even so, the set of technical innovations, new games, and unique features makes the Switch 2 one of the most relevant launches of the year in the gaming market.
