Since the final Dragon Ball Z , centered on Majin Buu , ended more than two decades ago, franchise enthusiasts have continued to explore countless topics of discussion. Among the many issues debated, the question of which of Majin Buu's various manifestations was the most formidable stands out.
The confusion in this debate arises from some conversations made by the characters throughout the narrative. Emerging from Super Buu's forced transformation, Majin Buu's original form, known as Kid Buu, causes uncertainty. Vegeta, when referring to Goku, mentions: "It's hard to say if he's stronger or weaker now", implying that Kid Buu's power may not have changed significantly. Later, on Planet Kai, Goku ponders: “He is now more powerful than ever.” The natural interpretation would be that Kid Buu, being the last form of Majin Buu presented, is the most robust. However, events reveal that Kid Buu did not, in fact, surpass Super Buu's power after absorbing Gohan.
About the episode:
Subsequent events clarify the situation. Upon being resurrected, Goku rushes to assist Gohan in the battle against the newly created Buu, who has absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo's Super Saiyan Phase 3 forms. However, Elder Kaio-shin interrupts Goku, stating that even with his current abilities, Goku no longer poses a significant threat to Buu. At that moment, the only viable strategy for victory would be to fuse with Gohan, thus combining their powers.
Goku agrees to the proposal, trying, unsuccessfully, to merge with Gohan, who is promptly absorbed. Upon finding a recovered Vegeta, Super Buu, now more powerful, quickly overpowers them. Faced with the imminent threat, Goku and Vegeta decide to overcome their differences and opt for a permanent fusion through the “Potara Earrings”, creating Vegito. Assessing Super Buu's true power (with Gohan absorbed) becomes challenging as he lost the only significant fight he had. However, his survival and near-successful attempt to absorb Vegito indicate much about his formidability.
Let's now go back in time to the appearance of Kid Buu. With the possible exception of Kibito-shin, the heroes do not have a clear understanding of Kid Buu's power compared to his previous forms. However, the fact that Goku faced Kid Buu head-on for a significant period using only Super Saiyan Phase 3, in the same way he fought Majin Buu's first form, may offer some closure. While this doesn't mean that the first form and Kid Buu shared the same power level, Kid Buu's easy victory over Majin Buu and Vegeta makes his fight with Goku all the more intriguing.
Two important reasons:
The misperception that Kid Buu is more powerful than Super Buu is rooted in two fundamental reasons. Firstly, he is considered the final villain, following the typical progression of forms of antagonists in the Dragon Ball series (such as Frieza and Cell), where each new phase represents an increase in power. While it's logical to assume that Majin Buu's last form is his most powerful, Dragon Ball Z surprises by defying that expectation, featuring a final battle with Goku without the need for fusion.
The second reason lies in Kid Buu's destruction of planet Earth, along with other planets. However, it's crucial to remember that Super Buu was about to perform the same feat until Goku and Vegeta fused. During the fight against Vegito, Super Buu could have repeated this act of destruction, but the fusion gave Vegito enough power to resist and counterattack. In short, if Goku and Vegeta hadn't fused, Super Buu would have, at that moment, annihilated the Earth in the same way as Kid Buu.
If Goku and Vegeta opted for yet another fusion for the final confrontation, they would undoubtedly have completely dominated Kid Buu. However, unfortunately, the pride characteristic of Saiyans interfered with this possibility. Thus, the only solution was to resort to the collaboration of all life forms on Earth to eliminate Kid Buu, using the powerful Genkidama.
In short, the predictability resulting from Kid Buu's pure evil and lack of personality places him as the most easily understood form of the villain. However, the indisputable fact is that Goku and Vegeta resorted to fusion to face Super Buu, especially after his absorption of Gohan. This context unequivocally establishes Kid Buu as the most powerful form of Majin Buu revealed in Dragon Ball Z.
