The anime's synopsis describes:

In Tokyo, in the year 198 of the Solar Era, the Fire Brigade special forces are fighting a phenomenon called Human Spontaneous Combustion, where humans become living infernos called "Infernals." While Infernals are the first generation of cases of Human Spontaneous Combustion, later generations possess the ability to manipulate flames while maintaining human form. Shinra Kusakabe, a young man nicknamed "Demon's Footprints" for his ability to set his feet on fire at will, joins the special forces of Fire Force Company 8, which is composed of flame users, and his job is to extinguish the Infernals they encounter. When a faction creating Infernals appears, Shinra begins to uncover the truth behind a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family 12 years ago.
