So, the penultimate episode 27 of the anime “ Frieren and the Journey to the Beyond ” (Sousou Frieren) titled An Era of Humans began as expected. After the first test of the first class wizard exam, we half expected a calmer episode. And, that's what happened after the second test too.

But the thing is, we only had half of episode 27 of Frieren calmly. Only the first half of Episode 27 followed the wizards who took the second test. And, we saw the group with: Kanne, Lawine, Denken, Richter and Laufen. Where are Wirbel, Übel, Land and Methode?
One thing I liked about this part of the episode was that we saw a mix of winners and losers. Kanne did well in the second Test, while Lawine did not perform well. Likewise, Denken and Laufen passed the second test well, while Richter did poorly. It's important because it shows that not passing the exam is not the end of the world.
As long as you have it in the area, you can try again in three years. And this is something that Denken was keen to point out to Richter. He said that Richter is a strong wizard who had such bad luck. And, in three more years, he will be even stronger.
And speaking of Richter, we also saw him repairing Fern's staff in his shop at Frieren's request. At first, Frieren told Fern to get a new staff because fixing hers wouldn't be worth it. And, Richter even agreed. But both Frieren and Richter realized they were wrong.
Of course, a new staff would be better than Fern's old one. But, a new staff wouldn't be Fern's staff. This staff is important to her. She's had it since she started training as a mage. And, she took good care of him over the years. In the world of magic, this counts.
The First First Class Wizard
Who was the first First Class Wizard again? Thanks to Episode 27, we learned that his name is Lernen and he's still doing well as a First Class Mage today. Normally, he is the one who supervises the third and final test of the exam. But this year will be a little different.
Do we know anything else about Lernen? Well, we know that, until this episode, he was the most seasoned of the First Class Mages. How do we know this? The Series itself holds him in the highest esteem. And, he is the only one of the First Class Mages who noticed that Frieren was holding her mana.
None of the others noticed this. They simply thought that despite being an elf, she had the same mana as a human mage. Lernen noticed that her mana production wavered for a moment and saw this as proof of mana suppression.
He has never seen what Frieren's true mana output is. But, he thinks he's on the same level as the Series. But by saying this, he ends up showing his own limitations. The Series actually releases a huge amount of mana that seems to be on par with Frieren's without suppression. But, this is not the true mana production of the Series.
You see, even though we say that this mana suppression is a mistake, the Series also does this. The absurd amount of mana that Serie releases is what's left after she suppresses her mana. So I can't even imagine how much mana she actually has. She may have more than any other living creature.
And since Lernen never realized this, we can imagine that Serie is even better at suppressing her mana than Frieren. Frieren's sister wobbled in a way that Lernen noticed. The Series never wavered. And, that's why Lernen is no longer the most seasoned First Class Wizard.
One complication attracts another
Frieren ended up harming this year's First Class Wizard Exam. She is “one hell of a wizard”. But wait, will I try to explain this? How does a magician being too much ruin the exam? Shouldn't it just mean that it's easier for her to pass? Yes, but there is more to it.
The problem is that Frieren ended up taking other magicians with her who aren't those things. Like, Kanne and Lawine. Without Frieren in their area, they probably would have done poorly in the first test. And in the second test, you can argue, as Serie did, that Frieren carried everyone who passed.
Yes, if Frieren wasn't there, Frieren's replica wouldn't be there either. But, Frieren (and Fern) managed with Frieren's replica on their own. And, they helped others come up with a plan. So, at the end of the day, having Frieren there was a positive balance.
That's why the Series chose to handle the final test itself. She needs the test to be so tough that almost none of the remaining wizards pass. And, her choice of test is a one-on-one interview with her. If she thinks that the magician in front of her is too weak, he's gone.
Kanne is the first one we see being kicked out. She failed at the time because the Series felt that Kanne was very bad with her own sister. And the same thing happened with everyone we saw, except Frieren and Fern. Frieren still failed for personal reasons. But, Fern passed.
Fern is the first person (we don't know about Frieren) who realized that Serie was holding back her own mana. That's why I said that Lernen is no longer the most seasoned First Class Wizard. Fern passed him. But we didn't get to see Denken meeting the Series. So, he might have passed the test too.
So, what did you think of Episode 27 of “Frieren and the Journey to the Afterlife”? Were you waiting for the final test in this episode? How do you think Lernen compares to Frieren and Fern? And, did Denken pass the test? I'm looking forward to finding out in the final episode.
