It is with regret that we announce that Studio GAINAX , known for iconic works such as "Neon Genesis Evangelion," has declared bankruptcy, thus ending a 40-year history of significant contributions to the anime universe .

Announcement

According to an official statement, the Tokyo District Court has accepted the bankruptcy petition of GAINAX Co., Ltd. The announcement highlights a series of executive failures and unsuccessful ventures, such as managing restaurants and an "unplanned" CG animation company, as well as large unsecured loans to executives. These factors led to an unsustainable financial situation, culminating in expulsions from committees for non-payment of royalties and lawsuits for unpaid loans, including a successful action brought by Studio Khara .

The statement describes GAINAX as a sinking ship, with numerous executives abandoning their positions, resulting in the loss of its animation production function. Former director Tomohiro Maki, described as having “no knowledge of anime production,” was arrested in 2019 for sexual assault, further aggravating the situation.

Announcement

Following the scandal, GAINAX reviewed its finances and discovered undeclared loans, unauthorized sales and transfers of intellectual property, and debt defaults. Recovery attempts, including the sale of the rights to "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt," failed, resulting in a debt collection process in May 2024. Therefore, they decided to file for bankruptcy, apologizing to everyone who had placed their trust in the company.

The bankruptcy marks the end of an era for the studio that brought us "FLCL" and "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann." Former members, such as Hiroyuki Imaishi, went on to found Studio Trigger, while Shinji Higuchi created Gonzo's "Welcome to the NHK" and "Hellsing." Studio Khara took over the GAINAX trademark, being recognized for its support during the difficulties faced by GAINAX.

This is a moment to reflect on the legacy left by GAINAX in the world of anime.
