It is with regret that we announce that the studio GAINAX , known for iconic works such as “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, has declared bankruptcy, thus ending a 40-year history of significant contributions to the anime universe .

According to an official statement, the Tokyo District Court has accepted the bankruptcy petition of GAINAX Co., Ltd. The announcement highlights a series of executive failures and failed ventures, such as restaurant management and an "unplanned" CG animation company, as well as large unsecured loans to executives. These factors led to an unsustainable financial situation, culminating in dismissals from committees for non-payment of royalties and lawsuits over unpaid loans, including a successful lawsuit filed by Studio Khara .

The statement describes GAINAX as a sinking ship, with numerous executives leaving their positions, resulting in the loss of its animation production function. Former director Tomohiro Maki, described as having "no knowledge of anime production," was arrested in 2019 for sexual assault, further exacerbating the situation.

Following the scandal, GAINAX reviewed its finances and discovered undeclared loans, the sale and transfer of intellectual property without permission, and debt defaults. Reorganization attempts, including the sale of the rights to "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt," failed, resulting in a collections lawsuit in May 2024. Therefore, they decided to file for bankruptcy, apologizing to all who trusted the company.

The bankruptcy marks the end of an era for the studio that brought us "FLCL" and "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann." Former members like Hiroyuki Imaishi went on to found Studio Trigger, while Shinji Higuchi created the gonzo "Welcome to the NHK" and "Hellsing." Studio Khara took over the GAINAX trademark, earning recognition for its support during GAINAX's difficulties.

This is a moment to reflect on the legacy left by GAINAX in the world of anime.
