The Gears of War franchise may break its Xbox exclusivity and land on PlayStation 5. According to information released by industry insiders, Microsoft intends to announce a remastered collection of the first three games in the series during the Xbox Showcase, scheduled for June 8th.

If confirmed, the release would represent the debut of The Coalition's iconic action saga on a Sony console. The original trilogy, released between 2006 and 2011 for the Xbox 360, would be re-released in high definition and should serve as a gateway to the next title in the franchise, Gears of War: E-Day.

Collection prepares the ground for a new game in the franchise

The potential arrival of the collection, informally dubbed the Gears of War Collection, has been discussed for months by fans and experts. The expectation is that the three titles will receive visual and technical improvements, expanding the series' reach and introducing Marcus Fenix and his team to a new audience.

This move aligns with Microsoft's recent strategy of relaxing the exclusivity of its franchises. In previous statements, Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, stated that the company will more clearly highlight the target platforms for its games, thus adopting a more transparent stance with the public. This change in approach could pave the way for Gears of War to reach a wider audience, especially with the release of E-Day.

Xbox Showcase should also feature new titles

In addition to the potential Gears of War collection, the event on June 8th is expected to bring other news. According to the insider known as extas1s, Microsoft is preparing a robust presentation with announcements eagerly awaited by fans.

Among the highlights mentioned are Ninja Gaiden 4, a remake of Persona 4, and a new preview of Hollow Knight: Silksong, although the latter is listed with less certainty. Rumors also mention trailers for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 and the highly anticipated Fable reboot.

The only content officially confirmed so far is the post-show dedicated to The Outer Worlds 2, the RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. The sequel recently had a gameplay preview revealed and will conclude the main broadcast of the event.

Microsoft expands its multiplatform presence

The inclusion of titles like Gears of War on competing consoles reinforces Microsoft's expansion strategy in the gaming market. The company has signaled a greater focus on services and audience reach, rather than relying exclusively on hardware sales.

If it happens, the arrival of the collection on PS5 could mark a new phase for the franchise and for the relationship between Xbox and PlayStation. For players, the change represents an opportunity to relive — or discover — one of the most influential series in the third-person shooter genre.
