After announcing Rupert Sanders as the director of the Hollywood live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell – written by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) – Dreamworks is in negotiations with Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) to take on the role of the protagonist, Major.
The plot should follow the storyline of the anime, in which Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic police officer, fights to bring justice to the streets of her Japanese megacity in a dystopian future.
Former Marvel executive Avi Arad (Spider-Man) is one of the producers of the film.
