Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury has earned a huge place in fans' hearts! Released between 2022 and 2023, the anime not only stood out for its impeccable animation and engaging plot, but also for its bold approach to LGBTQ themes. Thus, it managed to attract even those who don't normally enjoy mecha anime.
Previous titles like Gundam Build Fighters and Iron-Blooded Orphans had already made their mark, but Witch from Mercury broke records in 2022 with Gunpla (the famous Gundam model kits) sales, securing its place among the best of the decade. However, the series only ran for 25 episodes and ended on July 2, 2023, leaving many fans wanting more.
The Witch from Mercury gets a spin-off
However, the good news doesn't stop there! The spin-off manga Gundam: The Witch from Mercury – Frontier of Youth will be released on May 23rd, offering a completely different approach. Instead of a sci-fi future with space colonies and giant robots, the story takes place in contemporary Japan. Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran, the original protagonists, appear as ordinary high school students wearing Earthly school uniforms. Images of Suletta holding a broom have even been revealed, reinforcing her "witch" aura.
The manga will be published by Comic Newtype : author HISADAKE (the anime's scenario assistant) will be writing, while Hiro Hato, known for works like "Misumi-san wa Misukasenai ," will be the artist. As those involved revealed, there's a lot of excitement about expanding this universe, which already has light novels and other spin-off manga, such as " Vanadis Heart" and "Cradle Planet ."
A sales success since its launch
Undeniably, the true driving force behind the Gundam franchise is the Gunpla. Sales are sky-high, especially in Asia, but Witch from Mercury surprised everyone by outselling several modern series. The Gundam Aerial , for example, became one of the best-selling in history, alongside classics like Barbatos and RX-78 Gundam . Bandai Namco announced that the franchise's profits increased by 2 billion yen (approximately US$15 million) in fiscal 2023, largely thanks to this success.
