With 27 episodes, the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann series arrived in Japan in 2007, produced by Gainax (Furi Kuri, Evangelion, and Diebuster). It was subsequently followed by two films, two OVAs adapted from the spinoff manga, and finally a stage play.
The series tells the story of Simon, who finds an unusual treasure during his excavations: a drill-shaped necklace. A Ganmen, a comically shaped robot consisting only of a head, arms, and legs, attacks the village of Jeeha, and Yoko appears, fighting the "monster." Simon leads Kamina and Yoko to a "large face," which turns out to be a miniature Ganmen, designed for humans. Kamina names it "Lagann," and Simon pilots it.
The series continues, showing their journey in search of the return point of the beast-men, to eliminate their mysterious leader.
