The character Tobio Kageyama has undergone a great transformation throughout Haikyuu!! Since joining Karasuno , Kageyama has learned valuable lessons about teamwork and the game of volleyball itself. Although he started out as a selfish and arrogant player, he has evolved into one of the best volleyball setters in Japan thanks to the support of Hinata and the rest of his team.

Initially, Kageyama was nicknamed the "King of the Court" for being an exceptional setter since high school. However, his controlling and perfectionist nature made him fearsome to his teammates. No matter how hard they tried, Kageyama would only criticize his teammates. Then his team reached the point where they refused to play with him during a match. This experience made him realize how arrogant he was and why nobody wanted to play alongside him.
On the other hand, his evolution began when he entered Karasuno High School along with Shouyou Hinata . The fear of hitting balls that no one would catch haunted him, so he finally left behind the ego of the "King of the Court".

After joining the Karasuno volleyball team, Kageyama began to trust his teammates and embrace the team spirit. In this way, he learned to adjust his plays according to each player's strengths. Furthermore, Hinata was able to leverage his skills to make quick and incredible plays with the help of the prodigy setter. As a result, the Karasuno team gained a very strong and promising rookie duo.
The connection between Hinata and Kageyama allowed Karasuno to reach new heights, including an epic victory over the champion Shiratorizawa .
