Renowned director Hosoda Mamoru , known for works such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars , has announced his newest film: Hateshinaki Scarlet .
Therefore, the premiere of the film Hateshinaki Scarlet takes place in Japanese theaters on November 21, 2025, with animation by Studio Chizu ( Wolf Children ). Distribution will be done worldwide by Toho and Sony Pictures .
Synopsis:
The story, created and written by Hosoda himself, features Scarlet, a princess whose father, the king of her country, is murdered by enemy forces. After failing in her attempt at revenge, Scarlet awakens in a "Kingdom of the Dead," a place where existence depends on completing her journey of revenge.
Unlike her previous works, "Hateshinaki Scarlet" tackles the intense theme of revenge . In the previously released visual, we see the protagonist Scarlet—a princess dressed in white, covered in blood, wielding a sword and staring at the viewer with a piercing gaze. The artwork also features the striking phrase: "Should I go on living?"
However, Hosoda noted that the idea for the film came to him in March 2022, after observing the post-pandemic global changes, marked by conflict and instability. Thus, he said, "we live in fragile times," and the film seeks to reflect on how people react to violence, hatred, and the need to break the endless cycle of revenge.
