Hayao Miyazaki, director of acclaimed classics Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, in an interview (via RocketNews24) he expressed his disgust with the current anime industry.
While drawing a character, the director reveals the secret to the quality of his work and explains what is missing from current Japanese animated productions:
“See, whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think of this kind of design depends on being able to say to yourself, 'Oh, yes, girls like this exist in real life.' If you don't observe real people, you can't do things like this, because you've never seen them. Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves. Almost all Japanese animation is produced without any basis in observing real people. It's produced by humans who can't bear to look at other humans. And that's why the industry is full of otakus..
From the context of the statement, it is understood that the animator is referring to otaku in the pejorative sense, used to designate anime and manga fans.
Miyazaki, who announced his retirement from anime in 2013, is nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature with The Wind Rises and is currently working on an original manga about samurai.
