Hayao Miyazaki review

Hayao Miyazaki, director of acclaimed classics Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, expressed his displeasure with the current anime industry in an interview (via RocketNews24).

While sketching a character, the director reveals the secret to the quality of his work and explains what is lacking in current Japanese animated productions:

Look, whether you can draw like that or not, being able to think of that kind of design depends on whether you can say to yourself, 'Ah, yes, girls like that exist in real life.' If you don't observe real people, you can't do things like that, because you've never seen them. Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves. Almost all Japanese animation is produced without any basis in observing real people. It's produced by humans who can't stand looking at other humans. And that's why the industry is full of otaku.”.

Based on the context of the statement, it is understood that the animator is referring to otaku in a pejorative sense, used to designate fans of anime and manga.

Miyazaki, who announced his retirement from anime in 2013, is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature with The Wind Rises and is currently working on an original manga about samurai.
