The anime series Hibike! Euphonium (Sound! Euphonium) aired two seasons on Japanese television in 2015 and 2016. The anime inspired the Gekijō-ban Hibike! Euphonium: Kitauji Kōkō Suisōgaku-Bu and Yōkoso “flashback” film in April 2016.
The story begins when Kumiko Omae, a girl who was in her high school marching band, visits the school's marching band as a newcomer. Kumiko's classmates, Hazuki and Sapphire, decide to join the band, but Kumiko sees her former classmate Reina there and hesitates. She remembers an incident she had with Reina at the high school marching band competition...
The Kitauji Music Club used to advance to national competitions, but since the advisor changed, they haven't advanced beyond the Kansai tournament. However, thanks to the rigorous instruction of a newly appointed advisor, the students are steadily improving. The club members' daily lives are filled with ups and downs, including struggles over solos and the decision to give up club activities to focus on their studies.
Kyoto Animation announced two new anime films for the franchise in 2017. The Liz and the Blue Bird film centered on Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki premiered in Japan in April 2018.
The second new film, Sound! Euphonium The Movie – Our Promise: A Brand New Day (Hibike! Euphonium: Chikai no Finale), opened in Japan on April 19. The film follows Kumiko as a second-year student.
