During the first anniversary of the release of the film Evangelion : 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time in Japan, director Hideaki Anno decided to answer some questions from fans. He was asked if Mari was inspired by his wife, Moyoco Anno! So, let's find out together what the director had to say:

However, Anno denied the similarity between his wife and the character Mari from the Evangelion films , stating that “ this theory is nothing more than the assumption and speculation of several people . ” First, the author was indeed firm and convinced that his fans end up exaggerating sometimes.
Furthermore, the post reads: " Looking at articles, videos, etc., they claim Mari was modeled after Anno's wife, but this is nothing more than conjecture and speculation. At the time of production, it would have been impossible. Mari's personality (as well as Asuka's and others) was created by director Kazuya Tsurumaki [instead of Anno].
Synopsis:
