Hideaki Anno talks about Neon Genesis Evangelion sequel

The well-known creator Hideaki Anno anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion , commented in an interview about the possibility of a sequel.

Anno in an interview commented on his career and his new exhibition in Nagoya , Japan . When asked if he wanted to make Evangelion sequels or if he would prefer someone else to make them, he responded as follows:

“Hmm, there might be something like that. The prospect of an Evangelion sequel made by someone other than me may exist. I haven't decided yet, or rather, it's better for the work that there is a high degree of freedom. Whether it will be commercially viable or interesting depends on the content. I’m not saying I won’t do another one or anything like that.”

While an Evangelion sequel would certainly spark a lot of interest among fans, Anno's other responses in the same interview suggest he wouldn't be the one directing it . Anno is currently involved in a special project for the anniversary of “Space Battleship Yamato,” and says this represents a break from filmmaking.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

He reinforced that he was “mentally and physically exhausted” after having made “Thrice Upon a Time” in 2021, “Shin Ultraman” in 2022 and “Shin Kamen Rider” in 2023. Anno is known in the industry for his high standards and for get involved in all aspects of a title.

“Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” is the last part of the franchise, marking the end of the “Rebuild of Evangelion” tetralogy. A 2021 interview suggested that any sequel would not be a sequel to 3.0+1.0, with Anno saying:

“Right now, I don’t feel like I’m going to pick up the story where I left it.”

Although the news of a possible return of “Neon Genesis Evangelion” should have been unanimously received as positive, in reality there were mixed reactions due to fans' belief that there is nothing more to tell.
