After 14 years, we have a new officially announced project for the anime Higurashi: When They Cry . The news also includes a new game.
Therefore, the new series will be animated by Studio Passione (Interspecies Reviewers, Joshikousei no Mudazukai, Citrus).
The story takes place in mid-June of 1983, in a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, based on the village of Shirakawa, Gifu. Maebara Keiichi moves to the village and befriends Ryuugu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Furude Rika, Houjou Satoko, and later Sonozaki Shion. Keiichi joins the after-school club activities, which mostly consist of card or board games.

The first Higurashi anime series , When They Cry (Higurashi no naku koro ni), premiered in 2006 with 26 episodes, and When They Cry II: Solutions (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai) premiered in 2007 with 24 episodes.
Geneon Entertainment Inc. released the first anime on DVD in 2007-2008. Funimation released the anime on DVD in 2009 and 2010. Sentai Filmworks most recently released the anime on Blu-ray and DVD in 2016.
The project had an original novel in 2009 which in turn released Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou as 14 individual chapters.
Finally, there were several OVAs, two live-action films, a stage play, as well as manga by various artists.
