After 14 years, we have a new official project for the anime Higurashi: When They Cry . The news also comes with a new game.
Therefore, the new series will be animated by the studio Passione (Interspecies Reviewers, Joshikousei no Mudazukai, Citrus).
The story takes place in mid-June 1983, in a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, based on Shirakawa Prefecture, Gifu Prefecture. Maebara Keiichi moves to the village and befriends Ryuugu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Furude Rika, Houjou Satoko, and later Sonozaki Shion. Keiichi joins the club's after-school activities, which mostly consist of card or board games.

The first anime series of Higurashi: When They Cry (Higurashi no naku koro ni) premiered in 2006 with 26 episodes and When They Cry II: Solutions (Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai) premiered in 2007 with 24 episodes.
Geneon Entertainment Inc. released the first anime on DVD in 2007-2008. Funimation released the anime on DVD in 2009 and 2010. Sentai Filmworks most recently released the anime on Blu-ray and DVD in 2016.
The project had an original novel in 2009 which in turn released Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou as 14 individual chapters.
Finally, several OVAs, two live-action films, a play as well as manga by various artists.
