Synopsis
The story begins with Touko, a young girl from a papermaking town, who finds herself in the forbidden forest, attacked by flamelings, when a flamecatcher rushes to protect her. Elsewhere, a young man from the capital named Kōshi shelters his younger sister after losing their mother to the factory's poison.
Despite the brief synopsis, the light novel is set in a world in the chaotic aftermath of humanity's apocalyptic Last War. A vast forest, infested with fiery creatures and other fallen beasts, covers the world, and pockets of humanity live in small, protected communities. Due to a special weapon used in the Last War, humans spontaneously burst into flames even when they only approached a small fire source.
But now the only source of energy lies within the bodies of flamelings, beings hunted by firecatchers who explore the depths of the great forest. The firecatchers whisper tales of an individual capable of harvesting the fire of the thousand-year-old comet, the "Wandering Spark." This person would be known as the "Firecatcher Lord."
