In a letter read during the program, Togashi shared that he developed three of the possible endings. During the program, he presented the fourth possible ending, indicating that it could be considered the outcome if he dies before formally concluding the manga. Togashi is 57 years old.
The fourth ending (“final D”) takes place after a time jump, years in the future. Mirroring the beginning of the manga, a girl named Gin is fishing in a lake and catches a huge fish. She proudly takes the fish to her mother, declaring that her mother can never again ask her to become a hunter, before leaving her mother with the fish. Her mother debates Gin's future with her father, expressing disappointment that her daughter does not want to follow in her famous grandfather Gon's footsteps and become a huntress.
After a scene change, Gin reveals that she does not want to become a hunter due to how often her grandfather Gon left her grandmother Nouko alone at home during his adventures as a hunter. She promises to never leave the island and remain by someone's side forever, while a boy enters the room.
The last shot of ending D shows a bird flying away in the sky as someone watches.
Togashi hoped to devise an ending satisfactory enough to not need to resort to possible endings A, B or C, predicting a mixed reception from the public. He believed that reader reactions would be 80% positive for ending A, split evenly for ending B, and 90% negative for ending C. (He clarified that he personally did not think ending A would be highly rated by readers, only that it would be the “safe”, non-controversial ending.) Despite the overwhelming criticism he would receive from fans, Togashi personally preferred ending C among the options.
Ultimately, the manga went on hiatus in January, citing the author's health issues.
