Hunter x Hunter author reveals possible ending of the manga

The creator of the manga “Hunter X Hunter”, Yoshihiro Togashi, revealed on the talk show “Iwakura to Yoshizumi no Bangumi” that he conceived four possible scenarios to end the manga.

In a letter read during the show, Togashi shared that he had developed three possible endings. During the show, he presented the fourth possible ending, indicating that it could be considered the outcome if he were to pass away before formally completing the manga. Togashi is 57 years old.

The fourth ending (“ending D”) takes place after a time jump, years in the future. Mirroring the beginning of the manga, a girl named Gin is fishing in a lake and catches a huge fish. She proudly takes the fish to her mother, declaring that her mother can never ask her to become a Huntress again, before leaving her mother with the fish. Her mother discusses Gin's future with her father, expressing disappointment that her daughter doesn't want to follow in her famous grandfather Gon's footsteps and become a Huntress.

After a scene change, Gin reveals that she doesn't want to become a Huntress because her grandfather Gon often left her grandmother Nouko home alone during his Huntsman adventures. She promises to never leave the island and to remain forever by someone's side, as a boy enters the room.

The last scene of ending D shows a bird flying away in the sky while someone watches.

Togashi hoped to devise an ending satisfying enough to avoid resorting to possible endings A, B, or C, anticipating a mixed reception from the public. He believed reader reactions would be 80% positive for ending A, evenly split for ending B, and 90% negative for ending C. (He clarified that he personally didn't think ending A would be highly rated by readers, just that it would be the "safe," non-controversial ending.) Despite the overwhelming criticism he would receive from fans, Togashi personally preferred ending C among the options.

Ultimately, the manga went on hiatus in January, citing the author's health issues.
